Holiday Tins

So did you get any holiday tins this year? I got 4 this year. They are all different shapes and sizes and my thoughts as I finished using some of them was what do I do with them now? They are so good to have that I didn't want to throw them out but I also didn't want them sitting around just taking up space. So as I try to organize a bit this time of year, I found that these tins were quite useful in assisting me.

My first idea was to use them as a way to store my boxtops, caps and other items that I send in to my son's school. There are many great ways to raise money for schools. I do box tops for education, caps from Swiss Valley Milk and Campbell's points. What ends up happening is I save the caps, tear off the box tops and end up throwing them in the drawer in the kitchen. So I have decided to use one of these tins to help me organize my box tops and other items for when it is time to send them into school. This is going to clear space out of the drawer, help me stay a little organized and gives a good use for my tin. This way when I have to send them in to school I know where to look for them and they are organized and ready to go.

If you don't know about these great money-making opportunities for schools check them out. You don't have to have kids to do this. You can save these and drop them off at a school near you or a family members school.
We also go through so much dog food everyday and my son is in charge of feeding the dog. Sometimes it is hard for him to get his small arms down in those big bags. I am using the tin to put a few days worth of dog food in there and he can move this right over to the dogs bowl and fill them up. This has been a great help and a great way to use one of the cheaper tins that we received.

Did you get any holiday tins this year? What do you plan on doing with them? I still have two more tins left that I need to find a way to utilize at home. Share some of your tips with me and my readers on what you are going to do with your holiday tin. It would be a shame for these tins to go to waste.

Holiday Gifts

So today as I sit and think about how Christmas is in two days and think about what I might be forgetting or what I need to get, it reminded me of my childhood. I thought about a few things that you might want to think about yourself.

Do your memories of your childhood holidays involve a physical gift that was given to you? I have a few but for the most part my memories have nothing to do with the physical gifts but more the memories of the time spent together with family. Aren't those the real gifts?

Here are a few of my memories. I remember my Dad making waffles for us every Christmas. We had to eat before we could open presents and my Dad would make us homemade waffles. At the time you wondered why you would eat first and open presents second but now it has become a a holiday tradition. My daughter asked me today, is Grandpa going to make us waffles for Christmas? What would we do without those this year?

If you look back through the photo albums you will see me and my two sisters each holding up a wrapped gift and then it opened. That is another thing I remember. Seeing what funny outfits we were wearing first thing in the morning and how our hair happened to be that morning after waking up. I won't be able to spend Christmas with all of my sisters this year but I at least have the memories and pictures of those days.

I remember driving to our family Christmas party and the applesauce that my Dad made spilling in the car on the way there. Not funny at the time but now you can think about it and laugh. I can also remember the year I wanted the game Clue for Christmas and got 3 of them. How lucky was I? Well, I remember getting to play it at the family Christmas party with my Uncle Ed, who has now passed away and can't share the holidays with us anymore. I don't have that Clue game anymore but the memories of that day will be in my mind forever.

So this year while we are all worried about getting gifts for people and spending money that we don't have, stop and think about the things that really matter. Sometimes it isn't about how big of a gift that you buy but about how big of an impact you can have on the person and their future. Why not do something special for someone this year that they will remember forever?

The kids and I did our gratitude boxes this year. While they weren't too excited about doing it, I am surprised about the responses on the cards that they wrote to each other. It made me so happy that they could think of so many nice things to say to each other! That is something that they will have forever and can look back one day and think about each other and smile.

So this year I am going to focus on trying to give my children good memories instead of worrying about if I bought them enough gifts. I want to make sure that what I give them lasts forever instead of just for the moment. How about giving someone you love a memory that will last forever?

Our Husky Dog Kiva "Kivzilla"

Today I have decided to blog about something near and dear to my heart. Someone who I have grown to love, and someone who has become part of the family. Sometimes we call him Mutt or Muttzilla to be fancy. He is our Sibe, our Siberian, he is our Kivzilla, our Kiva the Husky Dog.

When you own a Siberian Husky, sometimes you wonder why you ever decided to get a dog who never wants to listen unless you have a treat, a dog when you hug him, you end up covered in dog hair, a dog that if he ever gets out would look at you calling him and just think I'll be back later for food and a dog who would say hello to the stranger coming in your house uninvited. Why sometimes I wonder if this dog can do anything, when he has the proper motivation I know he can do many things.

While sometimes this dog, Kivzilla, our Kiva, can be a pain, he has added much joy into the house. We got Kiva from Free Spirit Siberian Rescue. Free Spirit is a no-kill organization that takes in Husky and Husky-Mix dogs and tries to place them in loving homes. They are a non-profit organization that runs on the kind hearts of volunteers who love animals. They do lots of great activities for the families of these dogs and they keep any dog even when the situation isn't the best. Check out their website and see what great work they do and how many happy homes they have given to these dogs.

When I saw Kiva online, then Nanook, I feel in love with him. When I met the skinny little dog in person, he loved me right away. He had been in the shelter for 4 months and was given away because they said he was unmanageable. The kids loved him and he was fun to walk around. He sat good for treats, walked well on a leash and really seemed like a fun loving dog. I thought who would not want this dog and felt like we got lucky getting this one. Several days later we brought Kiva home. We of course were all so excited. He was like a new baby in the house and everyone loved him. Then the fun began.

Kiva wasn't trained as well as I thought. After him jumping on me eating and food flying all over, having accidents in the house, jumping on the furniture like a mad man and running around the house like it was a track, we brought in help for training. After stealing the steaks off the grill and running out the front door a few times we thought what did we get ourselves into. After getting some training and hard work, some things have changed and some have not. We have adapted to having a Husky Dog because some things will never change.

As I sit writing this blog my friend, Kiva, lays next to me on the floor. If I were to move now he would wake up and follow me. If I put on my workout clothes, I-pod and shoes he would get so excited to know that we were going for a run. He thinks we are going out for him. Sometimes when I sit here typing he comes up for attention and licks my fingers as I type. Annoying, but it shows how much he wants my attention.

While Kiva still won't come when I call him, I have learned that he isn't a lab and he is just well, Kiva! He seems to flock to me when I am wearing black pants as I yell at him to get away. He is smiling and happy as if he knows he will get hair on my pants. While Kiva can be the biggest pain in the butt, I must say that I love Kiva. He is now part of the family and I love when I come downstairs and he starts wagging his tail because he is happy to see me.

The best part about Kiva is that he was rescued from the animal shelter by Free Spirit Siberian Rescue, brought to our home and now has a loving family and has a given a family a lot of love and laughs! Kiva was saved and now he has added joy to people's lives.

Thank you Kiva and thank you Free Spirit!
Happy Holidays from Kiva The Husky Dog

My First All You Magazine

So up until October of this year I had never heard of All You magazine. When I went to Walmart in Bentonville the 11moms of Walmart introduced me to this magazine. So I thought I would check it out and get my first free sample.

It has arrived! I got my first free sample magazine in the mail yesterday. I subscribe to a lot of magazines. Sometimes I read them the first week I get them but it might take me a few days before I even crack them open. So I got my All You magazine yesterday and I have to tell you that I have already read it!

I am sure you have all gotten magazines that you read and you skip half of the articles because they don't apply to you or your just not interest. Well, I have to tell you this magazine I read from front to back! Wow is all that I have to say and I find myself to be pretty picky. I love the coupons, the money saving articles, and the things that apply to everyday women.

What I really loved was the recipes that they shared that were broken down by cost per serving. It gives you a really good idea of how much money you are spending on food and how much you could save by not eating out.

This magazine is really packed with everyday life tips and I think that I will be turning my free sample into a subscription! Right now you can get a two year subscription through the Deal Seeking Mom site, one of my favorite blogs, for $19.99. Check it out.

The thing that I love most about the All You magazine is the money saving coupons that are included. Here is a list of the coupons in the January 2009 issue.
  • $0.75 off any Fast Fixin Breakfast
  • $0.75 off any Fast Fixin Bag 20oz or larger
  • $2.00 off any Caltrate product
  • $2.00 off any Centrum product
  • $0.55 of any 2.5lb or 3lb bag of Tyson Boneless Chicken Breasts
  • $1.00 off any Skinny Cow Frozen Snacks 4 count or larger
  • $0.40 off any Lean Pockets Brand Sandwiches
  • $1.00 off any Boost Multipack
  • $0.75 off any Carnation Instant Breakfast powder
  • $1.00 off any two Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers
  • $1.00 off any two Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers
  • $1.00 off any two DeliMex Frozen Snacks
  • $1.00 off any Poise Product
  • $0.50 off any All You Health and Fitness Special Issue
  • $0.55 off any Disposer Care (There are 3 of these)
  • $1.00 off any 5 count or larger Jack Link's Jerky
  • $1.00 off any Carpet Fresh
  • $1.00 off any General Milss Cereal listed
  • $0.50 off A Taste of Thai Quick Meal
  • $1.00 off any two Stouffer's Corner Bistro

I mean WOW! Just look at all these great coupons. They more than cover the cost of the magazine and a few of these items we purchase all the time. I just love the Healthy Choice products.

I also love their website. If you aren't ready to commit you can go online and get 2 FREE Sample issues to try it out! If you don't like it just write cancel on your postage paid envelope when they bill you. Why not give it a try? I did, and loved it.

Campbell's Gift Basket

While taking my trip to the Walmart Headquarters in Bentonville they gave us the opportunity to visit with several other companies. Campbell's was one of them. To my surprise I saw so many different brands and products that I didn't know were all made by the same company. They had some of my favorite brands; Pepperidge Farm, Swanson, V8, Pace, Prego and many more. Check out their website for all their great products.

We got the opportunity to go into the Campbell's Kitchen and Chef Lee taught us about making stuffing and the do's and dont's of stuffing a turkey. It was a great time!

Upon my return home Campbell's send all of us Mom's these great gift baskets. Inside we have a Chef's Apron, Campbell's Recipes and Tin, a thermos to store your warm soup and another set of recipe cards. Then my favorite, a baking dish and ingredients to make Green Bean Casserole.

The Recipe Card Collection has 76 recipes from Campbell's and 24 blank cards for you to store you own recipes. I can't wait to try these out and share my experiences on my blog for you all to try. There are some great recipes in there!

The item that I love the most is the Green Bean Casserole dish. It has the recipe right on the bottom so you can have it ready when ever you need it. I loved the dish when it was made for us in Bentonville and I can't wait to try it at home.

So thank you Campbell's and thank you Walmart for this great trip and great goodies to try out!
